EU Policy for disasters prevention and risk reduction. On 29 February 2009, the European Commission adopted two communications related to disasters:  the first one promotes a Community approach to reduce the impact of natural and man-made disasters within the EU; the second one proposes a strategy enhancing disaster risk reduction in developing countries. Actions at Community level focus on areas where a common approach is more effective than separate national approaches, e.g. developing knowledge, linking actors and policies, and improving the performance of existing community disaster prevention instruments, such as GMES. Regarding developing countries, the Commission plans an EU strategy to help reduce the impact of natural disasters on high-risk countries and to enhance the political dialogue with developing countries. http://ec.europa.eu/environment/civil/pdfdocs/com_2009_82en.pdf
