This study aims to gather data about the amount of public procurements of research and development that are taking place in the Member States and that are not tendered EU wide. The purpose is to quantify the data in such a way that also allows the identification of R&D procurement expenditure across areas of public sector activity, and across categories of expenditure, in particular for this study focusing on ICT related goods and services procured. Deadline: 16 September 2011 http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/newsroom/cf/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=7157&utm_campaign=isp&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=newsroom&utm_content=type-news

SMART 2011/0035 Simulation, visualisation and visual computing technologies: EU position and future potential. The aim of the study is to inform decisions on future coverage and approach towards the fields of simulation, visualisation and visual computing within a future post 2013 EU Research and Innovation Programme. The study should analyse and assess the position of the EU research community and of EU industry in these areas. It should benchmark these activities against the main international competitors. It should also analyse the research and market potential in various application areas and identify the potential key players that should be involved in the definition of future R&D priorities and in subsequent research and development activities in the area. The data gathered and lessons learnt through this study will be fed into the Common Strategic Framework and Work Programme preparation process.

31 August to 2 September 2011 Pafos, Cyprus. Workshop on ‘resource discovery mechanisms for peer-to-peer systems’.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing has emerged as a popular trend in distributed computing during the last few years. P2P enables the large-scale aggregation of resources which are geographically-distributed and belong to unrelated administrative domains. This style of computing is characterised by the presence of an equivalent set of nodes, peers, ability to self-organise and the sharing of a set of distributed resources within a network. http://cordis.europa.eu/search/index.cfm?fuseaction=events.document&EV_RCN=33586

Final report of the Synergies Expert Group.
The final report of the Synergies Expert Group was published. Since October 2010, the Synergies Expert Group focused on synergies between the 7th Framework Programme (FP7), the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) and the structural funds (SF). The group has been analysing how EU research policy should be aligned across the main European research policy framework programmes and actions. In their report, the group found that innovation policies at EU level are currently fragmented and that coordination is suboptimal. The group also recommends that the SF should be better exploited for innovative public procurement to support the ‘smart growth’ objective. http://cordis.europa.eu/search/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.document&N_LANG=EN&N_RCN=33588&pid=0

Key Enabling Technologies – the future of European industry.
An expert group on Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) set up by the Commission published its final report with 11 policy recommendations for the development and deployment of KETs on 28 June 2011. The main conclusions call on decision-makers to adopt radical policy objectives to retain critical capability and capacity in Europe through a single and comprehensive approach to KETs. In particular, the group recommends that the vital importance of KETs should be reflected in the structure and funding balance in the upcoming framework for research and innovation and in the priorities of the EU’s future regional policy. The Commission reaction will be published in a communication at the beginning of 2012. http://www.czelo.cz/detail/?news=2653
