Digital Agenda: investment in digital economy holds key to Europe’s future prosperity, says Commission report.
Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) have driven half of the productivity growth in Europe over the past 15 years. Six out of ten Europeans regularly use the internet. However, if Europe wants to fully exploit the potential benefits of the digital economy, it must step up a gear and provide faster broadband and an internet people trust, improve citizens’ skills, and encourage even more ICT innovation. The European Commission will propose specific measures in these areas with its Digital Agenda for Europe, a flagship of the Europe 2020 strategy, to be launched shortly. http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/10/571&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=nl

Green homes don’t translate to sales success. Results from new EU-funded research show that home buyers are unwilling to buy new, energy-efficient houses. Poor communication between builders and buyers is a big part of the problem, say experts studying the behavioural barriers to better and broader acceptance of renewal energy. The project results are part of the CREATE ACCEPTANCE and CHANGING BEHAVIOUR projects, which received EUR 3.83 million in total EU funding. http://ec.europa.eu/research/infocentre/article_en.cfm?id=/research/headlines/news/article_10_05_19_en.html&item=&artid=16353

Digital Agenda: Information and Communication Technologies top total corporate R&D investment in Europe. Europe’s Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector, accounting for just 4.8% of GDP, leads the way in private research and development (R&D) in the EU, with 25% of total investment and 32% of researchers working in the private sector in 2007, according to a European Commission report released today. However, even with these numbers the EU is still lagging behind global competitors in terms of both public and private ICT R&D investment. This investment gap is identified as one problem to tackle by the forthcoming European Digital Agenda, one of seven flagship initiatives of the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO/10/188&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=nl
